Process paper-The McDonald's Revolution
Anytime McDonalds in mentioned in a conversation or as a topic, it is usually associated with negative ideas about health risks and unhealthy obesity in the 21st century. Whether or not you believe this to be true, when you really take a look, McDonalds has probably been the most amazing and successful fast food restaurant to this day. To know the comforting feeling of recognizing the golden arches almost everywhere we go, was really an amazing accomplishment that took a lot of hard work and dedication. Choosing McDonalds as our NHD topic was to let people know how they have transformed the fast food industry, taking the best qualities of different restaurants and making the most efficient and successful business that is recognized worldwide.
Conducting research was efficiently done by time periods. We began by creating an outline that included the early developments of the first McDonalds, their effective business management, and leading up to its global expansion. After deciding which ideas were the most important to include, we picked up a copy of “Fast food nation” by Eric Schlosser which had been previously read by a group member so he was familiar with its contents. The book led us to new sources that showed the revolution McDonalds created. We researched statistics on the company and were surprised at the consistent increase in profit McDonalds makes every year and how it grew to be a globally recognized. We briefly studied the culture in a couple countries such as Japan and India to understand why McDonalds created special menu items to match their typical dishes and eating customs. Any fun things we came across during our research were included in a separate hyperlink.
To understand the McDonalds Corporation, we felt a website was the best chose to organize our information in chronological order. Because we had previously worked with Weebly.com, it was easy to organize our research in a web site format. By creating main pages about each idea we wanted to present, it was easy to have a scroll down list which included more detailed pages that supported our main ideas. Also, using a website was one of the few categories that allowed us to include interactive videos to enhance our research. For example, we used short commercials for viewers to understand marketing strategies McDonalds used and their influence on small children.
What we consider the “McDonalds Revolution” can really be seen as a turning point in the fast food industry. It was the first fast-food place to provide the early idea of the Henry Ford assembly line and incorporated it in a restaurant setting. This technique was then used by many other fast-food places because it was efficient. Because of its many locations worldwide, it is easily recognized and will be visited by previous customers wherever they travel. McDonalds has created millions of jobs, fed families cheap meals, and revolutionized the fast food industry.
